My Favorite Things: January

January Favorites: Things I'm Loving LatelyI know these types of roundup posts aren’t exactly original in the blogging world, but I always enjoy reading them, and really like the idea of taking some time to write them each month. Especially in the wintertime, I find it’s easy to slip into irritable, negative moods. But by just taking a few moments to focus on the good (even if it’s seemingly trivial), it’s crazy how quickly your mood will follow suit. Gotta love the power of positive thinking!

I just put together a few for this month’s post, but I’m going to consciously jot them down moving forward, so next month’s will be jam-packed full of goodies. Here are the little, random things I’m loving lately:

Brussels Sprouts

Brussels SproutsIt’s nuts how drastically your taste buds change as you grow up. I was never a fan of brussels sprouts as a kid (was anyone?) and so I’ve gone through most of my life just assuming I didn’t like them. It wasn’t until recently that I gave this veggie another chance, and now I can’t. Get. Enough. I’ve been cutting them in half and tossing them in with veggie stir fries and roasting them with a little garlic to eat plain or add to salads. If you have other yummy brussels sprouts recipe suggestions, send ‘em my way!

Reading Books on my iPhone

ibooksI haven’t read this much since my college days as an English major! Having a book right there on my iPhone, a device that I’m literally never without except when showering, is so convenient. Yes, the screen is small, but there’s something satisfying about flicking through “pages” (paragraphs) so rapidly. I have a long list of books I want to read in 2014, and now that I’m using iBooks to read while riding the T, waiting in line, walking to the grocery store, and before going to bed, I think I really might get through them all this year—and then some! I’m currently reading Me Before You by Jojo Moyes.

Adding Basics to My Wardrobe

wardrobe basicsI have the go-to closet if you need something outrageous to wear to a theme party. But when it comes to basics and essentials, there’s not a white cami or black tunic to be found.

Lately, instead of spending money on funky, unique statement pieces, I’ve been investing in basic, practical clothing I know I will wear all the time—plain tanks and shirts for layering, flat/low-heeled shoes in neutral colors, simple sweaters—all those good wardrobe staples.

Getting dressed each day is a million times easier and I’m spending money on things that won’t just hang in my closet waiting a year for the next time it’s appropriate to be worn. $9 black t-shirts from H&M FTW!

I can’t even handle the cuteness.

I get sucked down some pretty random Instagram rabbit holes, and a few weeks ago, somehow stumbled upon this little longhaired Chihuahua in Asia with 136,000 Instagram followers (??). I’m in love.

What were your favorite things this month?

  1. I just finished Me Before You, and I absolutely loved it! I’ve taken on a big reading challenge this year too! One thing I find that really helps me keep track of what I’ve read and how much I liked it and what I want to read is my Goodreads account! If you don’t have one already, I would really recommend it!

  2. I’ve never thought of reading books on my phone – that is SUCH a great idea! I’m currently “reading” about five books, but never have a chance to actually make it through them. I bet that would change it!

  3. Brussel sprouts <3 so much love. Can't believe tomorrow is february! This month I was especially loving the blogging community and "family" that is not actually family.
    Happy Friday!

  4. My roommate and I are on a Brussels kick, too!!

  5. Oh my gosh why is that dog so cute?! I just spent the past ten minutes scrolling through all it’s pictures and now I’m sucked in too, and started following the account!

  6. Great post! I added a ton of ‘basics’ to my wardrobe this month too. It is oddly satisfying.

  7. I need to get more basics too! H&M always has the cheapest basics. FTW! 🙂 I love your nail polish too. Never been a Brussels sprouts fan. They kind of gross me out, but you never know I could change my mind sometime!

  8. I love to toss my brussels sprouts in a little sriracha and roast them. I have been eating roasted brussels sprouts and broccoli almost every day for the last few weeks. I have yet to find a seasoning that doesn’t taste wonderful.

  9. Teach me how to pull off a baseball hat! You’re so legit…

Also I tried to do iphone books but I’m blind as it is and my glasses make me look like a hipster so it was kind of a fail. Ugh I need contacts!

  10. I love reading monthly roundups, too! I’m totally not a January person, but reflecting on the monthly faves makes things seem not so bad!
I used to be the same in that I had a closet full of impractical things. One white t-shirt and 20 party dresses. Because that’s going to do me lots of good, right?! Since having my little guy, I had to re-evaluate my wardrobe and have been much more choosy with the things that I buy, focusing on staples and things that I’ll actually wear more than twice. I’m with you on the black baseball cap! I actually wrote that I want a black leather one in my Jan. recap.

  11. How are you finding Jojo Moyles’ book? I wrote a review of it on my blog –
I’d recommend ‘The Girl You Left Behind’ by the same author. xxx

  12. Where are those brown heels from!? I neeeeeed them

  13. Do you have a list of “essentials” you’re working off of?? I have way too much clothing but nothing to wear! Ive been searching for a all time classic “this-is-everything-you-need-in-your-wardrobe” list. Just gotta purge it all and start from scratch!

    • I don’t have a list, but I hear you–that’d be particularly helpful (especially for a clothing hoarder like me!). To start, I’d say a pair of skinny jeans, black leggings, black and white tank tops and tunics, a neutral-color cardigan, black flats, and then a couple fun scarves/pashminas. You can build a ton of outfits from that! 🙂
