If you already subscribe to my blog via email (look in the right sidebar—you can enter your info under Pumps & Iron Newsletter), you’ve probably noticed a little change to the “weekly” newsletter. I’m constantly trying to figure out the best way to do this, so this is just one makeover in a long line of past and future improvements.
Back in the day, you would subscribe to a blog via email so that you’d be notified every time a new post was published—many people still prefer to do this over following a blogger’s social accounts/typing in the URL daily. I think this is a great way to stay in the loop with blogs that only publish new content a couple times a week or month. Since I (usually) post almost every day, however, I thought it would be inbox overload for my email subscribers. That’s why, about a year ago, I switched over to a weekly email format that I could design and manage myself via MailChimp. Instead of getting individual emails every time I blog, you get one that includes all the past week’s posts. You can click the ones you’re interested in, and easily skim over the ones that don’t tickle your fancy.
That was my first improvement. But as blog readers quickly rose in popularity (bloglovin’, Feedly, etc.), I felt like my weekly email needed to offer more than just a list of all the week’s post to be worthwhile. I know for me personally, the thought of subscribing to emails from every blog I follow is ridiculous—that’d be like 100 extra emails a day. It’s so much easier to just go to bloglovin’ and scroll through all their most recent posts.
In an effort to provide email subscribers with something beyond just a list of my most recent posts, I’ve added some features to the Weekly P&I Newsletter:
- A fun fitness fact: I’ll share a little tidbit I’ve learned through my CPT course, group fitness training, nutrition research, etc. Don’t worry, I promise these will be useful and something that’s not common knowledge. No “drinking more water is good for you” duh! factoids.
- A product I love: This could be a new ingredient I’ve been using daily when cooking, a pair of workout leggings that I’d highly recommend—anything along those lines.
- Two older posts: A lot of awesome workouts, recipes and health posts lay buried in the archives of P&I. I’ll pick two rockstar, useful posts from the past and give them a second life at the bottom of each email.
Little changes, but hopefully an improvement! I’m also going to be better about keeping the newsletter weekly (vs. monthly…oops). I’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions. What would you want out of a weekly email newsletter?
