Since getting really hooked on Pilates Plus, it’s been taking the place of most workouts I would have normally searched for online. But from time to time, I still love to try out routines that other websites and bloggers are posting. Here are some I’ve recently done…

Legs & Abs Superset from Kama Fitness

When Karen from Kama Fitness suggested this workout to me, I was excited to try it out—an at-home workout using a med ball? Talk about right up my alley. The first superset (hanging knee raises and jump squats with the ball) was definitely the most challenging for me. I tried to take really short breaks between sets, so by the fifth round, I was struggling (in a good way!). Karen posts tons of other workouts on her blog, and I asked her a couple questions so you guys can get to know her:

Q: Tell me a little about yourself–besides blogging at Kama Fitness, what are you up to these days?

Karen: I’m a small town gal who loves to be surrounded by friends, family and good food!! There became a time in my life when I realized I didn’t want to eat all the foods my friends were eating…so I ventured off. I did endless amounts of research (and still do) on food, nutrition and exercise, and then eventually became a Certified Personal Trainer.

Nowadays, I train clients part-time and still work my regular office day job (boo!) but totally enjoying every moment of blogging. I created Kama Fitness to help spread how easy it is to enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle while still enjoying some beers on the side…ya know?? Because that wasn’t one of the foods I didn’t want to enjoy with friends!

Q: What’s your favorite way to workout?

Karen: Definitely weight training is my fave! When I began exercising, cardio and running were my thing. I was a huge cardio bunny, but about a year and a half ago I ditched cardio and still haven’t looked back. I weight train about 5 days per week, sometimes more (or less) and absolutely love a heavy lift! I also complete at-home workouts when I’m not feeling like a gym day, which are mostly bodyweight and light weight workouts. It helps to keep the change in my routine.

Q: Why is this Legs & Abs Superset Workout one of your favorites?

Karen: Legs & Abs Superset is one of my favourite workouts I’ve posted because it was a killer workout! I mean, every workout I do, I always try to make it really hard for myself, but this one just kind of popped in my head even when I had no sense of thought and no intentions except hitting a particular muscle group. I just remember after completing this workout that I had to share it with everyone on Kama Fitness—it’s unlike the other workouts I post which are all planned ahead of time.

Big thanks to Karen for sharing this killer workout and a little about herself! Check out her blog here.

Butt & Abs Tabata Workout from Fitness Blender

I actually just discovered Fitness Blender yesterday when I was mentioned in the same tweet as them—how twenty-first century of me. I did this butt & abs interval workout (they call it a tabata; but it’s not technically) this morning and really liked it. It wasn’t the hardest, but it’s a real-time video so you do it right along with the trainer, and they have a convenient countdown on the screen.

Difficulty-wise, they labeled this a 4 out of 5; based on that, I think I’ll stick to their 5’s next time I do a Fitness Blender workout. But I especially liked the alternating squat lunge exercise in this one (it burned!)—definitely going to incorporate that into future routines.

ORIGINAL WORKOUT HERE.

20-Minute Insanity Workout

Remember the Insanity DVD craze? The first time I did (read: attempted) one of these workouts was a couple years ago when I was visiting my friend in Colombia. Ninety-degree heat, gym with no air conditioning, hangovers—it wasn’t pretty. In fact, it ended with projectile vomiting.

This particular workout is a 20-minute version that the Insanity folks put together for Self Magazine, and it’s a heart pumper. Not exactly the best combo of exercises for anyone with knee or joint issues, but all the jumping around definitely makes you work up a sweat.

ORIGINAL WORKOUT HERE

10-Minute Workout from CrossFit Trainer Shirley Brown

On an average day, I’m going to spend more than 10 minutes working out; but if I’m super busy or super not-in-the-mood, I love quick, intense workouts like these. Halfway through the workout, you stop and stretch, which I actually really liked. You may be thinking, “It’s only a 10-minute workout—wouldn’t a break make it totally worthless?” but after the mountain climbers it’s a welcomed rest. This routine didn’t leave me sore the next day or anything like that, but it was a perfect way to get a quick blast of fitness in on a day that I otherwise wouldn’t have done anything.

Malibooty Workout from Tone It Up

Cheesy workout names aside (Malibooty??) the Tone It Up girls are great. They kind of make me feel like a horrible person because they’re all peppy and smiley and have perfect hair while I’m over here taking pictures of myself in baggy tank tops working out in my living room counting down the seconds until it’s socially acceptable to crack open a beer, but they know their stuff when it comes to health and fitness. This workout was good, but as far as targeting the ol’ (mali)booty, I actually ended up feeling it more in my hamstrings.

Hot 12-Minute AMRAP Workout from Zuzka Light

I love, love, loooove Zuzana Light. Discovering her high-intensity workouts when I was in college totally changed the way I approach fitness. I did this routine on a day when I just could NOT motivate myself to workout (we all know those days). This workout is only 12 minutes long—that, I could handle. I got through two full rounds of this and eight sets of the jump lunges in the third round, so I didn’t beat Zuzana, but I never do so there’s really no shock there. The jump lunge stretches really got those thighs burning!

ORIGINAL POST

Bootcamp Workout from Peanut Butter Fingers

This was a fun one! It takes 30 minutes to complete and the exercises are always changing so you don’t get bored. In between each mini circuit, I hopped on the treadmill for two minutes. I thought the last mini circuit of jump lunges and jump squats was definitely the hardest, and I would suggest really pushing yourself during the two-minute cardio sessions. At first I was just doing a leisurely 10-minute-mile pace, but amping up my speed really took the workout to the next level (that was a really meat-head-y sentence, I apologize).

November Knockout Workout from The Fitnessista

This workout was quick and awesome (and similar to some of the workouts I post here so maybe that’s why I subconsciously liked it so much??). I finished in 20 minutes. And I loved the side plank bottom leg raises. I’ve posted several workouts here doing side plank crunches with the top leg, but the bottom was a whole new challenge. Definitely incorporating this move into future workouts!

I don’t know. I spent more than half of March being too stubborn to take antibiotics for my sinus infection, so the result was a much lower level of physical activity and only two workouts from around the web to share with you guys this month. But they’re goooooood.

Jillian Michaels’ Core Workout for Women’s Health Magazine

I started going through this workout and was like ok, this is good, I can do three rounds of this no problem, this isn’t too bad…then I came to the third exercise. The uneven hold (I usually call these superman planks) is a challenging move on its own, but adding in the arm/leg fly—wow. I’m glad I did this workout in the privacy of my own home because I looked like an absolute fool wobbling all over the place trying to pull it off. Eventually I got the hang of it, but it was challenging to say the least. Anything that requires that much balance and stability is great for working your core.

The only modification I made was using 10-lb weights instead of 8 lbs. ORIGINAL POST HERE.

Brazilian Butt Workout from The Haute Bunny

When my friend suggested this workout, I couldn’t wait to try it out—she’s in way better shape than I am, so when she says a workout is good, I know it’s going to kick my ass. And this one did. Literally. My attempts at getting in and out of a chair the next day were absolutely pathetic.

It’s a long one for a targeted-muscle-group workout—took me almost 40 minutes to get through all three rounds—but it’s worth it. Definitely give this one a try if you’re looking to tone up that ‘donk. ORIGINAL POST HERE.

Speaking of nothing that has to do with what I’m about to say next, I went down to the Vineyard to visit my parents on Saturday and got in a great beach walk and a run through the woods that inspired me to do another half marathon. Being impulsive as usual, I immediately signed up for one the first weekend in June. I’ll post my training schedule later this week.

It’s kind of like a Facebook for fitness enthusiasts—only it’s way better than Facebook because no one will post 17,000 pictures of their newborn babies on your newsfeed. In addition to building out my own profile, I’ll be providing Tribesports with content from time to time, and will certainly keep you guys in the loop when I do!

As for this legs challenge, I completed it in 10 minutes and followed it up with the core challenge and then 30 minutes of cardio on the elliptical—a great workout! ORIGINAL WORKOUT HERE.

FitSugar’s No-Excuses Body Weight Workout

This was a good one! One minute of high knees is no walk in the park, so right off the bat your heart rate is going to be pounding with this workout. The only alteration I made was doing skiers instead of running in place. ORIGINAL WORKOUT HERE.

No Nonsense Circuit Workout from Peanut Butter Fingers

I did this workout from PB Fingers on my lunch break one day and loved it. I needed something quick that would hit all the major muscle groups, and the No Nonsense Circuit Workout took about 25 minutes and did just that. I found the squats-to-squat-jumps-to-lunges sequence to be the toughest part. ORIGINAL WORKOUT HERE.

10-Minute CrossFit Workout from Celebrity Trainer Yumi Lee

I like to workout in the morning because it leaves me energized for the day, but some days I wake up and am just NOT. FEELING. IT. (We all have those mornings, right?!) This CrossFit workout seemed perfect for one of those mornings because it’s only 10 minutes long. No matter how tired and grumpy I am, I can convince myself to suck it up for TEN minutes. And this routine really gets your heart rate up in just that short amount of time. If I were to do it as my only workout of the day, I would probably add a few more rounds of the circuit. ORIGINAL WORKOUT HERE.

This blog would be strikingly different if I didn’t. And while the fitness routines I post here each week keep me healthy and fit, I still love trying out others’ workouts. It gives me new ideas for exercises to incorporate into my own torturous creations, and it keeps my personal fitness routine from getting boring. Thanks to Pinterest (damnit I just can’t quit you!), it’s easy to find online workouts you can do at the gym and from the comfort of your own home. I want to start sharing with you some of my favorite finds from around the web, so I’ll start doing these little roundups monthly.

Amazing Abs Workout from the BodyRock Archives

I don’t follow BodyRock anymore (which I think is changing its site name to The Daily HIIT?), but in college I lived and breathed by these workouts. The site was started by Zuzana and Freddy Light, but when they decided to divorce and went their separate ways, I followed Zuzana with her new ZWOW pursuit and left Freddy and his creepy, over-sexualized fitness blog behind. But I still like going back in the BodyRock archives and doing Zuzana’s old workouts, and I did this one the other day. It’s quick (only 12 minutes long), but it’s challenging. You will be BURNING during the kick-up/mountain climber peak segment. ORIGINAL WOKOUT HERE.

Bob Harper’s 20-Min Circuit Workout for Fitness Magazine

Any Biggest Loser fans out there as obsessed with Bob Harper as I am? I love that man. So, naturally, I had to try his 20-minute circuit workout as soon as I stumbled upon it. I made a couple modifications to increase the challenge:

Added weights to the alternating lunges by holding a 10-lb kettle bell in each hand

Used a 15-lb kettle bell for the side shuffles

Did a full side burpee (with jump) instead of just standing

I loved the routine with my modifications and my thighs were feeling it the next day! ORIGINAL WORKOUT HERE.

The Core Challenge from Tribe Sports

I like doing short ab workouts before heading out on my morning run—for many reasons. First off, you burn more calories during cardio if you do some form of weight training beforehand. Second, we all have our pesky problem areas and mine just happens to be my midsection ($10 says my mom is reading this sentence, shaking her head and thinking well maybe you should stop drinking so much beer!…no one asked you, Mom!). As an added bonus, in the wintertime, it’s a great way to crank up my body temperature before venturing out into the freezing pre-dawn Boston air.

I love switching up my ab workouts, so when I found this Core Challenge from Tribe Sports on Pinterest, I was excited to give it a try. It takes about 10 minutes to complete and gave me a good burn. Definitely pair it with some cardio. ORIGINAL WORKOUT HERE.

FitSugar’s Total Fat Burning 0-60 Workout

This workout from FitSugar takes about 20 minutes to complete and I found the 60-second plank unusually challenging when done at the end of the sequence. I went for a quick run after I did it for a nice well-rounded morning workout. ORIGINAL WORKOUT HERE.

ZWOW #46: Tight Space Workout from Zuzka Light

As I mentioned earlier in this post, I love Zuzana Light and her workouts. They’re short but oh-so-brutal. ZWOW #46 caught my eye because it only requires a set of hand weights (I used two 10-lb weights) and you can do it in the smallest of rooms. I didn’t beat Zuzka’s time (I never do), but I finished in a respectable 14:49 compared to her 13:45. Try it out and see how quickly you can do it—without cheating or sacrificing your form. ORIGINAL WORKOUT HERE.

I’ll post another roundup at the end of February to highlight some of my favorite online workouts from the upcoming month. Have any you think I should try? Let me know in the comments section!
